New low-cost tablet launched for students

Aakash, touted as world’s most inexpensive tablet, has a new competitor. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology at Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management at Kolkata has launched Classpad, an tablet running on Google’s Android 2.2 operating system.
The Classpad is aimed at students and teachers, said Rohit Pande, who launched the device.
“Classpad’s user-friendly interface makes it convenient for the students and teachers to get acquainted with the application. The device is equipped with a software that is designed to integrate smoothly with an existing school platform. It also provides the content in a ‘school friendly’ manner by supporting commonly used school applications,” said Classteacher Learning Systems, the company behind the device.
The tablet will enable teachers to provide content to the students instantly and conduct tests and assessments without any hassle. They can also share classwork through the tablet application.
The tablet will also serve as an e-reading device, with the capability of storing dozens of books. Currently the Classpad will complement the curriculum as per the book, but in the future, it will also create an opportunity to save money on textbooks and conserve natural resources, the company said.
“Our education system does not differentiate students according to the learning capabilities and teach them at the same level, but the software installed in Classpad tests students’ problem solving, creativity and application of language skills. It provides them with personalized teaching as per their learning capabilities. Equipped with artificial intelligence, Classpad can help to categorize students as fast learners, average learners and slow learners. Classpad can assist in reducing the monotony of repetitive sessions in the classroom. Teachers can now complete their syllabus within schedule and get considerable time to focus on slow learners,” Pande was quoted as saying at the launch of the device.
Tablet Details:
The tablet, which comes with a capacitive touchscreen, has a 1.3 Ghz processor and runs on Android 2.2 operating system. It has a built-in memory of 4GB which is expandable up to 8GB.
The Classpad will come in three sizes (7, 8 and 10 inches) and cost between $140 and $263

Telefónica to deploy LTE in 2.6Ghz

Spain’s Telefónica announced LTE deployment at Mobile World Congress , saying it will use Alcatel Lucent’s LightRadio technology in the 2.6Ghz frequency band. Deployment is expected to begin in Chile and Brazil. According to the company, the service will provide download speeds of 100 Mbps, and between 40-60Mbps on upload. Telefónica explained that the difference in its deployment is that in the conventional deployment, radio base stations co-exist with 4G metro cells (small base stations incorporating antennas and radio) working on the same frequency and with no interference. During the announcement, Telefónica highlighted as the most significant feature the increased capacity to support 30 people browsing simultaneously with an average speed of 30Mbps. The telecom operator noted that the network supports speeds of up to 10 times those offered by the 3G network, with download speeds of 100Mbps, upload speeds of 40-60 Mbps and with latency times of around 20-25 mi...
